Rebuilding Together Twin Cities' Safe at Home Program

Falls Prevention Awareness Day Is September 23rd

Did you know that every 35 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall? One third of older adults fall each year in the United States, making falls the leading cause of injury deaths and the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions among this population. For persons 65 and older, nearly half of all falls occur in their own home. And while 83% of older adults hope to age in place, nearly 60% are unable to devote any funds to the maintenance or modification of their homes.

These statistics are staggering, but there are ways to help prevent older adults from falling in their homes. For example, the Center for Disease Control lists home modifications, like installing grab bars and handrails, as one of the top four recommendations for reducing the risk of falls.

In honor of Falls Prevention Awareness Day, Rebuilding Together Twin Cities is taking this opportunity to share information with the community about falls prevention how to help older adults live safely and independently in their homes. The Safe at Home Program makes minor safety and accessibility modifications, such as installing grab bars and handrails. These basic modifications can prevent falls and enable older adults to continue to live safely in their homes for years to come.

If you or someone you know might benefit from the Safe at Home program please visit their website for more information or contact them at SafeAtHome@RebuildingTogether-TwinCities.org or 651-776-4273.

Partner Spotlight:

Accountability MN--Tax Assistance and More

RSVP's partner site, Accountability MN, has been providing tax assistance to seniors and people with low incomes for nearly 40 years. Recently, they have expanded their services to include free financial advice on topics such as budgeting and saving, and free credit reports and credit counseling. Additionally, they have partnered with local credit unions to enable clients to open savings accounts regardless of their previous financial history. Accountability volunteers see that clients get all the refunds for which they're eligible, then help them use their refund to move from "getting by" to "getting ahead". "These services contribute to our mission of poverty reduction and asset-building," said volunteer coordinator, Adam Faitek. They also provide more opportunities for volunteers who like working with numbers. "Our volunteers find it very satisfying," Faitek says, "because they can see the impact of their work."

Volunteer training for tax assistance programs will begin in December. For more information, call: 612-617-7820.

Volunteer Spotlight

Kathryn Vilendrer, Meals on Wheels Driver

Kathryn Vilendrer has been a volunteer with Roseville Senior Center ’s Meals on Wheels Program for about four years, and finds it very rewarding. A former social worker, she felt drawn to help out when she saw a request for drivers in her church bulletin.

“I felt it was a good fit,” she said, “ I feel like I’m accomplishing something for them, and I really enjoy the interaction, they’re very pleasant,” she says, adding that the brief personal contact during delivery is as important to the clients as the meal. “For some of them, it may be the only social interaction of the day,” she pointed out.

She delivers meals every third Friday, visiting the same people every month. The clients are always happy to see her, and she has slowly gotten to know them. Her delivery route “takes about one-and-a-half hours, max,” she says, adding, “A lot more people could use their free time to do something good for another person.”

Got Stage Fright?

Help Support Our Performing Group From Behind the Scenes

RSVP’s Pretty Good Players present role models with positive attitudes about growing older, who give honest, upbeat presentations about aging.

Our goals:
-to use performance to educate the public about aging issues.
-to reflect with sensitivity and accuracy the diversity of older Minnesotans.
-to promote and support vital aging.

Join usWe need people to help support/coordinate the group behind the scenes:

- Promotion/marketing: help generate publicity to spread the word about us (increase our exposure for bookings and recruiting new volunteers).

-Scheduling: using phone and/or email/meeting wizard: contact performers to find compatible times for rehearsals and performances, etc.

-Office Help: type or copy scripts, recordkeeping, correspondence, assemble script books, etc.

-Writers (or just skit ideas): Share your ideas and experiences with us and we'll use them to educate/entertain others.

-Performance Enhancement skills: Directing, voice coaching, etc

-Misc: we sometimes need help with photograpy, videography, audio, props...

By the way, in the event that you do happen to enjoy getting up in front of others, we can always use more performers: actors, singers, musicians, dancers, storytellers…

Call 612-617-7820 for more info.

Got a Spare Hour?

Substitute Meals on Wheels Drivers Needed

There is an urgent need for substitute Meals on Wheels drivers! Right now a lot of volunteer drivers are out of town for summer vacations etc, so many programs are very strapped to find subs than can fill in. Volunteering one time can really help out, and it only takes a little over an hour.
Call 612-617-7820 and we'll connect you to your closest MOW program.

Free supplemental insurance and other RSVP benefits are available to volunteers 55 and over.
