Children's Book Drive
Did you know that 60% of students living in poverty have zero children’s books in their home?!
Experience Corps, a program of Volunteers of America of MN and a partner with RSVP, is holding a book drive to support the students at one of its partner schools in St. Paul – The Barack and Michelle Obama Service Learning School.
Help us send books home with each of the 600+ kindergarten – 6th grade students at Obama Elementary! (Books appropriate for Ages 5-12).
You can support the book drive in two ways:
• Donate new or gently used books appropriate for Ages 5-12 to one of the drop-box locations before May 15th:

Fun Activity!
Join the Rockin’ RSVP Drill Team
Our partner organization, the Macalester-Groveland Living at Home Program, has invited RSVP to create a drill team to march with them in the Grand Old Day Parade on June 5, 2011.
We want to create a fun, attention-getting drill team that reflects the vitality of older adult volunteers and promotes the work of Living at Home programs, which help older adults stay independent at home, and RSVP volunteers, who help the community in so many different ways.
March with us -- Help plan our routine -- Create our prop rockers—Name our group
We need 15 marchers—plus backups and support people.

The drill team will start organizing by the end of March.
The Parade is 10 AM on June 5, along Grand Avenue, from Fairview to Dale.

A devastating impact on communities in need: 100% cut to funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service
Last week, the House of Representatives voted in favor of H.R. 1, a Continuing Resolution that will fund the federal government through September 30, 2011, the last seven months of Fiscal Year 2011.
This resolution makes a 100% cut to funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that funds:
• AmeriCorps
• Senior Corps
• Learn and Serve America
• The Volunteer Generation Fund
• The Social Innovation Fund
Cutting these funds would eliminate over 85,000 AmeriCorps positions, an entire federal agency, and have a devastating impact on communities in need across the country.
This week, Congress is taking a "district recess" which means they will be home in their districts engaging with their constituents. Voices for National Service, a nonprofit who advocates on behalf of the National Service community, has organized "Save Service District Day" on February 25th (tomorrow).
Those who support these efforts may consider calling, emailing, or going to their Representative or Senator's office to voice support for National Service. On the website, there are links to talking points and local offices in order to connect with others on the 25th. Please feel free to pass this on to others!
The Age4Action Network believes that people 50+ will strengthen society and improve communities through their active engagement and valuable contributions as dynamic advocates, valued workers, committed volunteers and lifelong learners. To achieve our mission, the Age4Action Network will connect diverse organizations and individuals and provide them with the tools they need to activate people 50+ to work in their communities to further the common good and to influence public policies that support engagement and social action for people 50+. Good News From RSVP’s Own Weatherman:
Barry ZeVan Says This Should be the Last of the Subzero Temps!
Officially, he’s retired, but you’d never know it. Not only is he busy with volunteer work and projects across the country—he still keeps a keen eye on the weather.
I was among those grumbling about the cold at a recent meeting.
“Oh, this is the last of it,” he assured us.
“Well--we’ll see,” I said—forgetting who I was talking to.
“No, really, it is,” he said. “I’ve been watching the satellite pictures, and there’s a big shift in the upper air pattern; the Arctic air is moving off, and Pacific air—"
“Oh--duh--I forgot!” I said. “Barry ZeVan, the Weatherman! Do you mind if I quote you?”
Graciously, he said that I could.
Barry is an RSVP volunteer, serving on the board of our partner organization, MnCAAN, the Minnesota Creative Arts and Aging Network, which works to expand opportunities for older adults to express themselves through the arts.
